The R69S is the 600 sports model of the new range presented in September 1960 and comprising the R27, the R50/2, the R60/2, the R50S and the R69S. It develops a power of 42 hp at 7000 rpm. Like the R50S presented at the same time, the sports camshaft is specific, the gearbox has had its ratios tightened and the airbox is of a larger volume. It is distinguished externally from other flat-twins with a touring connotation by the rocker covers with 2 fins instead of 6, the finned exhaust nuts and the inscription "R69S" on the rear mudguard. Compared to its predecessor, the R69, this S version benefits from an automatic ignition advance. In 1962, it benefited like the entire range from the reinforced frame at the steering column and the vertical tubes of the swingarm axle.
The reliability problems affecting the R50S did not spare the first R69S models either and modifications appeared in 1963 to overcome these problems. A vibration dampers (Damper) was mounted at the end of the crankshaft that year and the cylinders were reinforced.
At the end of its production, the 12-volt alternator option was also offered to the long list of options already available (rev counter, crash bars, white paint, luggage rack, etc.).

In 1967, an evolution was offered only for the American market, the R69US. This machine differed from the R69S by the adoption of a Maïco brand telescopic fork, a prelude to the future R75/5 and tested off-road since the early 60s. The US market represented the largest volume of export sales and it was decided to create a transitional model with a telescopic fork. This model was therefore only produced for the USA.

Its production was included in the 11,317 units of the R69S.

With its 42 hp and 175 km/h, it placed itself in the sector of the top models worldwide.

It was withdrawn from the catalog in 1969 like the R50/2 and the R60/2 after a production of 11,317 units and was not replaced in the range by a sports model until 1973 with the appearance of the R90S. The top-of-the-range version of the future 5 series being a touring model with a larger displacement than this 600, the R75/5.
